MIDGET EAGLES DEFEAT GRETNA 12 - 0 8/26/00 - The Arlington Eagle Midgets (1-0) won a solid victory over the Gretna Dragons Saturday at the Elkhorn Middle School football field. The well practiced offense and a rock solid defense both contributed to a great start for this season. In first quarter play, the Eagles opening drive fell short and the Dragons took possession, but faired no better. Seth Pearson and Nathan Hilgenkamp stopped drives by Gretna forcing them to punt. Bruce Mastin blocked the punt and Thomas Grove took possession for Arlington. Hard driving Adam Hamre quickly earned a first down as the quarter ended. Possession fell to Gretna with an Arlington fumble, but they were slammed by the hard hitting Eagles defensive line including Doug Hilzendeger and Thomas Grove. Once again the Dragons were forced to punt, but another Arlington fumble quickly returned the ball to them. Jordan Johnson, Taylor Escamilla and Thomas Grove again put down the Dragon drive. Gretna's punt was blocked and the ball recovered by Bruce Mastin at the Dragons 18 yard line setting up the Eagle's first touchdown of the season by Seth Pearson. The extra point attempt stalled at the one yard line, but a Dragon fumble gave the ball back to Arlington as the first half came to an end. The kick off to Gretna began second half play and once more a solid defense squashed the Dragon as Arlington took possession at the fifty yard line. A fifteen yard face mask penalty on Gretna in the next play helped advance the ball to the thirty-five, and once again Seth Pearson ran a pitch in for the Eagle's second touchdown. The extra point attempt failed, but the Dragon's attempts to move forward in the 3rd quarter do too. The fourth quarter action took off with an interception by Jordan Johnson, but the Dragons finally got fired up with their own interception and 45 yard return of an Eagle pass. Despite earning two first downs in this drive, the Dragon's fire got put out for good and Arlington's first victory is set in stone.
